Five generations. One family. A tradition still being written.

In 1906 Tommaso Anastasio, a young fisherman from Sicily, came through Ellis Island and sold fish from a pushcart on South 9th Street. His youngest son, Tony, sold fruit and produce, and in 1938 he parked his cart outside 903 S 9th St and rented the store. A 1989 trip to Italy gave Tony’s grandson Anthony the idea of an Italian café at home. On April 21, 1995, at 22, he opened it in his grandfather’s store: the market’s first new coffee house in nearly 50 years. The Chocolate House and its gelato followed in 2003, and Anthony’s children are the fifth generation on the market.

“It’s in your blood. There really is no other way to explain it.”Anthony Anastasio on life on the market, to The Philadelphia Inquirer, 2019

The menu

Rooted in Philadelphia. Inspired by Italy.

Anthony’s own coffee blends date back to opening day: the Italian Market Reserve, the house coffee Anthony drinks all day, and the Palermo Espresso, its best-selling espresso. Panini come on rosemary focaccia, the cannoli are hand-filled with Nonna Anna’s ricotta cream, and the gelato is made in small batches right on 9th Street. The Chubby panini is named for Pop-Pop Chubby.
