A French bakery named for Anne’s grandmother, Madelaine.

Anne Dufour comes from a family of French chefs: her great-grandfather cooked aboard the ocean liner France, her uncle cooked in fine New York restaurants, and her mother was a pastry chef for the White House. Anne spent 18 years in France running venues in Saint-Tropez, Cannes and Monaco, and also worked in London and on Saint Martin. She came to New York in 2012 and opened her first café, French Café Gourmand, in the Financial District. After moving to Jersey City, she turned a corner bodega at Coles and Second into Café Madelaine in July 2018, named for the grandmother who inspired her all her life.

The menu

Quiches are the stars of the show.

Quiche is the best seller, baked from a French recipe passed down for three generations, in flavors from Swiss cheese and bacon to goat cheese and smoked salmon. The rest is French too, from the bread for the sandwiches to the pastry: croissants and danishes, croques, savory crêpes, salads, tarts and cakes, all baked in house. Espresso comes from Sicilian Miscela d’Oro beans, and the macarons are by Thierry Atlan, a Meilleur Ouvrier de France.
