Owner story · Jersey City
“We create a space where you can feel as if it is ‘your place’ too.”
Soledad Riquelme · Owner, Gia Gelato & Cafe

From El Ombú to Gia
The regulars who bought their favorite café.
Soledad Riquelme and her husband Axel came to Jersey City from Argentina about 20 years ago. Their daughter went to school around the corner from Gia Gelato & Cafe, a Newark Avenue café since 2013, and they were regulars. When COVID-19 closed El Ombú, the empanada shop they ran in Union City, someone told them Gia was for sale. They took it over in early 2021, kept the name, and brought in Argentinian dishes, local artists’ work and Thursday tango lessons.
“We were customers of Gia Gelato before we bought it.”Axel, to Hoboken Girl
