Pariwaar means family

A family restaurant on Newark Avenue, and now on Washington Street.

Pariwaar is Hindi for family, and the name is the promise: every visit should feel like being part of one. Chef Afreen learned to cook from her mother in India and cooked in a local restaurant before Pariwaar’s owners spent six months renovating a storefront on Newark Avenue, in Jersey City’s India Square. They opened in 2019. In January 2025 a second Pariwaar opened at 616 Washington Street in Hoboken. Both kitchens are certified hand zabiha halal.

The menu

Dum biryani, sealed with dough and cooked in its own steam.

The pot is sealed with dough and the biryani cooks in its own steam for four hours, a Hyderabadi technique passed down through generations, with eighteen spices, some shipped from India. There are more than 20 biryanis, Pariwaar’s take on Yemeni mandi in platters for two to five, Chicken 65, tandoor and Indo-Chinese.
