Yunnan, in English, is “south of the clouds.”

Liheng Geng is a Yunnan and Brooklyn native. He cooked with his father at Yun Nan Flavour Garden, the family’s restaurant in Sunset Park, then went back to Yunnan and ate his way through its villages, almost four bowls of rice noodles a day. In January 2018 he opened South of the Clouds on West 8th St, right off the NYU campus. Grove St in Jersey City followed in 2025, the first in New Jersey, and a third restaurant opened near Columbia that September.

The menu

Eight hours of broth, and Yunnan by the bowl.

Every day the kitchen simmers pork leg bones, pork spine, beef bones and chicken for over eight hours. The bowls travel the province: Mengzi’s beef noodle soup, a Kunming braise, Dai dishes from Dehong, and Yunnan’s most famous dish, crossing-the-bridge noodles. Eater NY called the tofu pudding bowl “the best bowl in the place.”
