Ismael Mercado · Owner, South Street Souvlaki

A South Street institution
Fifty years at the blue and white window.
Tom Vasiliades came from Greece at 12, sold ice cream at 509 South Street from 1974 and turned it Greek in 1976. In 2019 he handed the restaurant to Ismael Mercado, a longtime employee. It has stayed “comfortingly the same”: gyros and kebabs from the window, Tom’s rice pudding on the menu, rebetiko until late.

The menu
Tom’s rice pudding is still on the menu.
The founder’s name stays on it: Tom’s Famous Rice Pudding, Tom’s Special Salad, a lentil soup from “Tom’s special recipe.” Around them, a taverna menu with the Greek names first, from dolmades yialadji to youvetsi, and a page of vegan dishes.
